Questions and Answers

Will you publish my book?

We are looking for new authors who want to get their book into the world – and for experienced authors either looking to change publishers or to try a different approach with higher royalties. So if you have a book you would like us to consider, please email an introductory letter and some chapters to contact@acropolispublishing.co.uk

How do you assess manuscripts?

We check the subject matter and quality of writing in submissions (your covering letter and manuscript) and that they meet our editorial guidelines, such as no racism. We will then be in touch to discuss next steps.

How quickly will I hear from you?

We will contact you within six days of receiving your manuscript.

Why does my book need an ISBN?

An ISBN is an International Standard Book Number. It is a standard identification number for your unique book both nationally and internationally. You need an ISBN in order for your book to be listed for sale in the book trade. Having one also ensures that a copy of your book can be permanently stored by the British Library.

Does my book need to be typeset?

Typesetting sounds like an old-fashioned term – and perhaps something you can do without. Since word processing programmes have myriad fonts and fancy features such as images and tables, does your manuscript really need 'typesetting'? Can't we just print your book from a Microsoft Word document? The short answer is we could, but we won't, because it would be lower quality. We use specialist software to typeset your work – that is, to lay out lines of text on the page. A typeset book looks much better than a book printed from a Word document or a typewritten manuscript. It will make your book look like it has been professionally produced – which it will have been!

Why do you need to proofread?

Proofreading is when your book is reviewed for any errors and corrected. It is necessary to ensure your book reads well and is free of mistakes. Authors often miss mistakes in their own manuscripts, which is why we insist that every book is checked for mis-spellings and other errors.

Will Amazon sell my book?

We don't own Amazon (obviously!), but all of our paperback and hardback books so far have been listed on Amazon and other online sites.

What royalties do you offer?

We give back the majority of the income we receive from book sales to the author. Conventional publishers typically offer 'advances' to sign up the author and then pay out quite a low percentage of income for sales actually made. Under our system, the author bears more of the costs of production but benefits from taking home far greater amount per sale. This means that if a book does well, or even becomes a bestseller, an author will fare much better under our new approach than they would have with other publishers.

How do I submit my book?

Just send some chapters or the whole manuscript, in an email with a covering letter introducing you and your book, to contact@acropolispublishing.co.uk
